Title: Hufflepuff
Rating/Warnings: character death
Characters/Pairing: Cedric Diggory, (all mentioned) Cho Chang, Harry Potter
Summary: All year, Cedric can't shake the feeling that something horrible is going to happen.
Word Count: 430
Notes: written for Writer's Block: Random Word challenge

There's something about this year that feels different to Cedric - more intense, more urgent, like he needs to experience as many new things as possible before the end of the year. He knows it's not even the prospect of being one of the champions for the Triwizard Tournament, though that probably factors into his uneasiness. No, this is something else, and he can't quite put his hand on what it is.

Nevertheless, or maybe because of this uneasy feeling, he's found himself doing things he normally wouldn't, just for the thrill of having done something against the rules, something secret between himself and whichever friend (or friends) he decides to include. Nothing illegal, of course, but just fun little interludes throughout the year. Like nicking food from the kitchens for the first time with a small group of friends after Christmas. Or blowing off class one beautiful afternoon in the spring with Cho - or that one night he went flying after curfew, just to feel the wind in his face.

The only thing he can't really bring himself to do is go and talk to Harry - oh, he's talked to him in snatches here and there, but it's mostly been related to the tournament, and he sometimes wishes that he could go and befriend the younger teen without feeling like he's betraying his own house. It's really a shame, because he feels like he and Harry would get on pretty well.

Besides, he also wants someone to talk to about his dreams, and he feels Harry, being who he is, would understand his concerns. Most of the time when he wakes up, he can't ever remember the dreams, but he knows that they're unsettling because he remembers the tight fear that coils in his belly for hours afterwards, and the nausea that accompanies his immediate awakening. He can only remember a few details; red eyes, a flash of sharp teeth, a low slithering voice that makes his flesh crawl, and a feeling of nausea and impending doom. He's never really been one for interpreting his dreams, but these ones won't go away, and it isn't until he's grasping the Triwizard Cup with Harry (and he feels that sharp tug of nausea in his gut from the portkey) that these details flash back through his mind.

Cedric tries to act calm in the face of his rising fear, but then he hears those words - "Kill the spare!" - and he sees the flash of green, and there's no time left for regret as his world goes dark for the last time.
