"Oh for heaven's sake, Ron, I thought we'd been through this already!" Hermione's voice wafted up from the stairwell where Harry sat, and he inwardly groaned, not wanting to deal with those two going at each other yet again. He couldn't help a mild curiousity about what they were fighting about this time, although the possibility of getting involved in the argument was rather a turn off for him. A moment later, he cringed, noticing that Hermione's voice had gotten louder now as she went on about Cormac this and Quidditch that... So that was what they were fighting about. As always. He wished they would shut up.
"Hermione, come on, why can't you just admit that you were wrong? It's not like you had fun at that bloody party anyway, Harry told me all about it." Oh dear lord! Harry retreated up the stairwell a bit as they got closer, inwardly seething at the way Ron had brought him into it anyway. Now he was going to have to deal with Hermione going off on him about telling Ron about her party disaster.
"Oh, did he?"
"Look, it doesn't matter, 'Mione, can't you just stand by me? It's not like I'll hold it against you, I won't cry, promise, just... stand by me. I need you right now, okay?"
That made Harry pause and stare hard at the wall in surprise. That was probably the weirdest... maybe the most sensitive thing he'd ever heard Ron say. And it almost didn't sound like the Ron he knew... but then, Ron still didn't know that he was starting to fancy Ginny, so how could he throw stones? Regardless, before his two best friends could find out he'd been eavesdropping, he fled up the stairs to his dorm, pulling out the Half Blood Prince's potions book and hiding behind it before they could come into the room, pretending to be absorbed in it again. He didn't think he wanted to go to Hogsmeade with them after all, if they were going to fight or be awkward.
